Introduction

A syllable is part of a word containing one vowel sound; it may also contain one or more consonant sounds. The number of vowel sounds determines the number of syllables in a word.

Syllables represent beats in words. Counting syllables and practicing syllable stress help you become aware of the rhythm of English.
